Look at some of the things you find in a church: what are they used for and when are they used?
How do I pray?
This pattern of prayer has helped many children. Try it for yourself!
The Bible says, ‘Jesus got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.’ Mark 1.35
- Find a special place to pray.
- Sit or kneel down and get as still as you can.
- Read one of the bible stories of the life of Jesus in one of the four gospel books - Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. Think about what you have read.
What have you discovered about Jesus, God or the Holy Spirit?
Should you try and change the way you behave or think about other people?
Is there something you should say sorry for?
Now, you can speak to God in prayer. Use your 5 fingers to help you. Pray for....
- thumb - those closest to you.
- forefinger - other people
- middle finger - leaders of the world
- ring finger - those who are weak and vulnerable
- little finger - you and your needs
Remember to say thank you for things as well as ask for God’s help. Enjoy being with God and always remember how much he loves you!
You may like to keep a prayer book. Write some of your prayers in it as well as some of the answers and how you feel.
To finish your prayers many Christians pray the Lord’s Prayer which Jesus taught his disciples.
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
Finally, ask God to bless you, your friends and family with these words.
The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace.
Amen.
